Expressing Pain

…of the sting of a bee (on his right temple, if you look closely) this sculpture was made of boxwood in the Netherlands around 1620. The art-historical comment refers to the allegory of Amor as a honey thief, here being punished.

This unique artwork is part of an exhibition at Wiesbaden Museum, under the title “Honey Yellow”, on the Bee under historical and biological perspectives.

Some more pictures as extras. Note the document signed by Napoleon, and bearing a wax seal, granting the nearby town of Mainz the right of a revolutionary city.

And the vanity painting (“What I Am, You Will Be”), from 1620 too, bringing to attention that before the early 19th century candles were made of natural wax, what made them precious and expensive.
