The Woodland Garden (Friday 9th May 2025)
Until my car port was removed last year, this climbing rose, known as Dog Rose, Hedgerow Rose or Japanese Rose, was held against a garage wall by its posts, but has now fallen outwards, getting in the way of the car. In a couple of weeks it will be cut back and fixed to new trellising, but as it has begun to flower I thought it was time to record its glorious bloom.
Is it a wildflower? According to Gardeners' World, "While it is often grown as a garden plant, Rosa rugosa is listed as an invasive, non-native species on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act in England and Wales, meaning it is an offense to plant or otherwise cause to grow these species in the wild." Apparently all roses began from a wildflower, so I think it probably is where it comes from, so I include it in Miranda's Wildflower Challenge, as well as in BikerBear's Flower Friday, with thanks to both.
