High flying

This morning we walked into the centre of Santiago de Compostela to explore the cathedral. We bought a combined ticket so were able to visit the museum holding many treasures, and then the cathedral roof. My blip shows the view from up there. I found it pretty scary walking about on the steeply sloping granite slabs! I was surprised that we weren't warned before going just what was involved.  There were no checks on our footwear, or on our health or age! In fact we were sold concessionary tickets being so old!! Anyway, we survived and the views were spectacular. See extra
Once we had descended the stairs inside the cathedral we visited the Portico de la Gloria at the far end of the cathedral nave.
It's a medieval masterpiece of sculpture. There was a Mass taking place while we were there. It must have been a special one because there was some very fine singing, and then we saw the botafumeiro being swung across the transept in front of the altar at the other end of the nave. It's a huge incense burner( 80kilos  in weight and 1.60m high) and takes 8 men to move and guide it across the transept.  It seemed to move terrifyingly fast about a dozen times!
It's a rare event apparently nowadays.
(I'll admit I found it all rather bizarre!)
We needed a large  coffee and piece of traditional almond cake after all that excitement.
