One Swallow Doesn't Make A Summer But ...
...two in the house made my day! (Extras)
It was a beautiful morning and I was eating my breakfast with the doors open. I heard different, excited bird sounds but didn't go to investigate. Shortly afterwards a pair of swallows flew in. They didn't seem scared but flitted and hovered around the rooms twittering happily. I opened windows and eventually they flew out. MrQ built this wooden bungalow thinking that if he moved to the south coast, which he was considering, he could pull it down and use it as a packing shed there. It's quite dilapidated and barn-like and I'm wondering whether the swallows were checking it out as a possible nesting site. They're known as barn swallows because they like to nest in sheds and barns or under bridges near human habitation.
I was so pleased to see these birds as I've never understood why I don't see many swallows here and why they don't build in our sheds. It's the perfect habitat for them as the muddy lake is next door. We had lots at the family home nesting in the boiler houses and outbuildings.
