Another Cheltenham musician
Brian Jones, the founding member of the Rolling Stones, was born in the Park Nursing Home in Cheltenham on Saturday, 28 February 1942. I don't know whether his birthplace can be visited in the same way that we visited the birthplace of Cheltenham's other famous musical son, Gustav Holst, but I did find out from the friends we met, who live in Cheltenham, where he is buried. So, his burial place will be on my itinerary for next year's visit to the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. It will be interesting to see if it is obviously visited by fans although I doubt it will be as shrine like as Jim Morrison's grave at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, which I have visited. In the meantime, I just had to pay my respects at this piece of street art in one of the town centre side streets. Jones was a multi-instrumentalist although he is best known as a guitarist. He became estranged from the band as it became more and more successful with the spotlight increasingly falling on frontman, Mick Jagger, and the iconic figure of Keith Richards. That and substance use accompanied by erratic behaviour and jealousies eventually led to Jones being forced to leave the band. He was found lying motionless at the bottom of his swimming pool on the night of 2/3 July 1969 and subsequently pronounced dead at the age of 27. Two days later the Stones gave a free concert in Hyde Park which they dedicated to Brian Jones. Jagger was dressed in a white frock suit and began the concert by reading a poem by Shelley and releasing a cloud of whi8te butterflies. I now because I was there along with more than 200,000 others. Meanwhile Mick and Keef are still touring at the age of 81. .
