Why are they called clocks?

Yesterday I joined an 8 week workshop to create an abstract piece of textile art relating to interconnectedness. Apparently it is an international thing! I am completely out of my depth since I'm not very creative and abstract is a complete mystery to me. But, it is fun and I'm hoping that by the end of it I will be able to produce something.
