Portuguese man o’war
This is one of the most extraordinary thing’s Iv’e ever seen. It is a beautiful organism on the surface with pink and blue lustre colours and intricate design but underneath, the long strands of tentacles and polyps, that can grow to around 10 metres, are deadly to small fish and crustaceans and can give humans a nasty and painful sting.
RIB #5 - we went out at 08:45 this morning in dead flat seas and sunshine, just beautiful. We saw this man-o war and some lovely Risso’s dolphins (extra), but try as they might, the crew could not find the Blue whale and Fin whale that had been spotted by the vigia (person who spots whales from the island and radios the location to the boats). We were out for over 4 hours and the weather turned for the worse with very choppy seas on the way home.
RIB #6 - out again at 14.45 for two and a half hours. Some nice spottings of Sperm whales, common dolphins and a few more Rissos, easily recognisable by their scarred looking skin.
