Brooding

It's hard to find a different word to describe it. Built between 1803 and 1809 and designed by Douglas Asher Alexander, the same man who redesigned Maidstone gaol, it originally housed French and American prisoners of war. Éamon de Valera was imprisoned here as well as at Maidstone and Lewes - two establishments that I know well.

I'm working here tomorrow and decided to scout out the journey from the hotel. It's along narrow lanes across the top of the moors and I arrived through low hanging mist and the rain was coming down in stair-rods; I hadn't seen rain all day - in fact I left home in blazing sunshine.

Now I'm sitting in the hotel garden next to a little waterfall listening to the birds singing. There are a couple of goldfinches in the tree next to me and all is well with the world. I hope your Wednesday has shaped up - the weekend is within touching distance hombres!
