A Grand Mini Tour
Yesterday was a Mini Grand Tour, today was a Grand Mini Tour, there is a difference… ;o)
We were at the gates of Alnwick Castle Gardens before they were open. It started an overcast cold morning but by the time we left the sun was shining and it warmed up nicely.
Main Blip: The first thing to grab your attention is the grand cascading water feature. I have included views looking up and back down. The view of the castle is limited unless you hike somewhere or pay extra. We are currently more interested in gardens than buildings so we gave that a miss. My snap was taken as we walked to the town. I’m sure other views are available.
One of the key attractions is the Poison Garden. I guess they don’t trust guests to visit that without a guide and tours were thin on the ground on account quite a few schools and tour groups were taking the time slots. This didn’t bother me.
The ducklings were in the cafe following their mum who was looking for handouts.
Extras: I quite liked the the other water features especially those in the Serpent Garden. Other images on this collage include scenes from the Cherry Tree walk (note the blossom as now finished). The number of swings amongst the trees became quite eerie, akin to the repetitive rows of gravestones. Each even had a dedication to a lost loved one. :o/ (they were fun to sit on).
Finally a few shots around Alnwick. We had lunch in the White Swan Hotel, a 18th century coaching inn. In the 1930s the then owner installed a number of features from RMS Olympic, Titanic’s sister ship including the 1st class lounge. The bee mosaic was one of 3 made by school children and placed near the castle garden gate. The cross stands in the market place.
More great stuff tomorrow!
