More Progress

Carpet fitting day at last! My sister came over and together we dragged the (very heavy) mattress into the spare room, leaving only the bed frame in the main bedroom and no other furniture. I checked with the carpet shop what time the fitter might arrive, and we just had a bit of time to pop out for some lunch first. When we got back, the window cleaner had been so they were all sparkling and clear. Not long after, the carpet fitter arrived. He pulled up a bit of the old carpet to reveal concrete floor, no underlay, no backing on the carpet and long strips of Velcro stuck to the jute carpet backing and floor to hold it down. “Well I’ve never seen that before!” was his bemused comment. It had already been there for about 18 months when Mum and Dad moved in 20 years ago and hadn’t ever been changed. Now I understand why the floor always felt so hard and cold underfoot. I left the fitter to get on with the work, and soon we could hear lots of hammering as he fixed proper gripper to the floor, and a good quality underlay. “I can smell new carpet” said my sister, and we peeked round the corner to see a wonderful expanse of pale green laid across the room. When it was finished and we went in, it was like walking on air - fabulous! My photo really doesn’t do it justice at all. The room now looks nothing like it did when it was Mum and Dad’s, and that is a good thing. I’m making it my own, and they would be very happy about that.
