Marine Terrace
First of all a walk along Foulney Island at low tide, as far as the sign which told me to “tern back now” (someone likes puns). No one else there apart from a distant warden beyond the roped off section, no doubt checking on the ground nesting birds.
Then a walk to Roa Island, where I saw that the little Piel Ferry was coming in. So I got on board to visit Piel Island for the first time. An impressive ruined castle, a pub serving bbq food, sedge warblers, sandwich terns and seals.
Returning I walked back to the car and drove to Sandscale Haws north of Barrow, to explore the deserted beach and extensive dune system. The few people around weren’t far from the car park, elsewhere - no one.
Very tired feet at the end of the day.
I’ve taken lots of photos, including birds, flowers and derelict structures. But it’s this image of Marine Terrace on Roa Island, looking towards Piel Island, that I especially like. A view of the terrace from Piel Island in extras.
