Blackberry bush

Which I planted last year, not sure that it was a good idea.  It needs to be told that it can only grow in the space allowed, and in the early spring I removed its attempts to colonise the rest of my allotment. its not the same as the wild brambles which grow in hedges in the countryside.  The flowers are more densely packed - and given that it’s a magnet for bees, I hope I will get plenty of blackberries.
The ground on my plot is so hard and dry, that when I attempt a bit of digging, I feel like an olive farmer on a Greek island, try to break up the soil with a pickaxe:) I give up the digging, and tackle some weeding.  A blackbird comes down and stands so near me we’re practically touching.  I realise he is hungry, maybe even starving.  I haven’t seen a single worm since I’ve been here.  I must bring him some dried worms I have in a packet at home, the next time I’m here.
In the evening, we (the Orkney film club) watch another Irish film “Herself” currently on BBC i player - about a woman with two girls, escaping a violent husband and building a new life for herself and them. It was a story mostly of people helping each other, and i enjoyed it. A fantastic soundtrack of current day Irish musicians.
