Music and dance

Intended going to the canal to see the "Bradford Progress" with musicians in boats en route from Bingley 5 Rise to Saltaire. However I was unsure at what time and where to join the canal as it sounded like it would be slow progress along the waterway. So instead I got a couple of buses along to Saltaire and went to Roberts Park. The Half Moon Cafe was doing a roaring trade so I got a takeaway salad and coffee and went up to the bandstand to find a nearby bench.  The event here was South Asian music and dance. The leaflet description was "South Asian sounds from Kaiser Khan, Shah-e-Marden Group, Song-Geet and a line-up of classical Indian music and dance brought together by Bradford multi-instrumentalist Vijay Venkat, Kamalbir Singh, Devaki O'Riordan, Srividya Venkat and Annapurna Indian Dance". It was certainly different and the Indian dancers wore costumes in the most beautiful colours. Some of the instruments were fascinating and one of the crew kindly took time to explain to me what each one was and insisted that I repeated the names back to him - not sure about my pronunciation skills! Spoke with a lovely lady who plays with a group in "Bingley Music Town". We had a long chat about music, choirs etc. She eventually couldn't stand the sun any longer and left, but I stayed on a while as I wanted to see the "Song-Geet" ladies. However, the sun was very intense so I sadly needed to leave before they came on. Bought water in Saltaire village, arrived at the top road just as the bus did, bought a few items in Bingley and caught the bus back to the village by the skin of my teeth! :-0)) A great afternoon.
