Otter and Arctic Fox

Another reason for coming back to Kent this week was for Susan’s birthday today.

She chose to go to Wild Wood near Canterbury, a place she’s wanted to visit for many years. It’s a sort of Zoo of mostly UK wildlife and former native species which have been extinct and reintroduced in recent years. Not that the Arctic Wolf falls in that category.

And very enjoyable it was too, the enclosures were spacious and gave the inhabitants opportunities to engage in natural behaviours, like the wolf digging frantically for something or other. The brown bears, deer and otter were amongst the other highlights.

In the Wilder Wild Wood, part of Blean Woods European bison have been introduced to manage the woodland. Very successful they are too, with new calves being born.

From there we drove to Canterbury, parked at the University and walked into the city for a three course birthday meal at Prezzos using a gift voucher she’d been given. It was a very disappointing set menu, you could have carbs to start, carbs for main course and carbs for desert. Nothing healthy on the menu at all.

Through negotiation and compromise we gave up desserts in return for two side salads. The staff tried their best given that was the set menu.

We tried to burn up the carbs walking back up to the University for a performance by Daphne’s Flight - they’re on their last ever tour owning to the illness and retirement of one of the group. Wonderful harmonies, quirky songs and great lyrics made for a very enjoyable evening.
