Yesnaby, Stromness and the Stones of Stenness
This morning we went for a walk along part of the coastal path at Yesnaby. The remains of the old World War 2 gun batteries are still there, exposed to the elements on the cliff tops. The little sea thrift flowers among the maritime heath and grassland were looking lovely. It was very windy and exposed, but the views were worth it.
We then left Yesnaby and headed to Stromness. Although many places were closed (it is a Sunday after all) we had a nice wander around town and harbour, and had a coffee too.
We then stopped off at the Stones of Stenness; believed to have been raised over 5000 years ago, only four of the original eleven stones remain. They are part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site.
