Myrkjanoyrarfjall
Today I worked until early afternoon, and I've decided on who will be appointed to the funded PhD studentship that I'm offering. The decision was prompted by him saying that his application had been rejected - by some administrator who should know to ask before doing something so embarrassing! - and me reading his references.
After a late lunch, I headed out into the fabulous sunshine, walking around Klaksvík to take the same lovely trail that I used last Sunday. It was seriously warm walking up, and I cooled off in the shade of the hut below the 430m col. There I took the shady east side of the north ridge up to the Myrkjanoyrarfjall plateau. Unlike last year (in April) there was no snow to enhance the scene, but the views were still fabulous. Amongst the many peaks in the photo is Klakkur - my local hill - above Klaksvík, most of the islands of Kalsoy and Kunoy (nearest) and many more distant hills on the island of Eysturoy.
This time, from the (689m) summit I continued across the plateau, taking in the views from the east and west edges, gradually dropping down to a familiar spur that I can see from my window as I write (see extras). To complete the walk, I wanted to walk around a big open corrie and then drop down to the Klaksvík "park". However, this required me to negotiate a gash in the ridge, that looked on the map as if it might be difficult. In the event it was fine, with a handy rope to help secure the reascent and tell me that I was going the right way! One of the wonders of this area is that I could take in so much in just a 4-hour walk from where I'm staying.
I was glad to get back to the flat for a cold beer and a cool shower!
Thanks for all the acknowledgements of last night's sunset blip.
