Bollington

SUNDAY

Today marked Harriet’s 30th birthday.

We used a website to help us find a spot for a meet-up, given that people were coming from Nottingham, Leeds, and  Wales. For equal travel times, the site suggested Bollington, a charming former mill town in Cheshire, just south of Manchester.

A delicious meal at The Lime Tree restaurant, followed by a leisurely stroll through Bollington itself. Later, we headed to The Vale PH beer garden, where we settled in with drinks and enjoyed watching the last dozen overs of the cricket match under the warm evening sun.

Bollington has several interesting landmarks, including the Grade II Listed Aqueduct (photo), which carries the Macclesfield Canal over Palmerston Street.

Another highlight is White Nancy, a striking stone folly perched on top of Kerridge Hill. Standing 6 meters tall and painted a bright white, this 1817 monument celebrates the victory at the Battle of Waterloo. It's so visible that it can be seen from as far away as Shropshire and the western hills of Cheshire.

A good day out.
