Sehitler abidese

Started the day at the Turkish memorial - Sehitler abidese - to their 253,000 dead in the Galipolli campaign. The huge memorial with its dramtic friezes overlooks the Dardanelles and is set within the most beautiful red and white rose gardens. My blip today shows one corner of the enormous, but symbolic, cemetery (there are no burials here). From here I went to the French military cemetery at Sedulbahir. Few people visit this cemetry and France's contribution to the Galipolli campaign is largely forgotten despite their losses being so much greater than those of Australia and New Zealand combined. After that I went back to Anzac to climb the ridge up to Plugge's Plateau with its fantastic views across to the Sphinx, Razor Ridge, Monash Gully and the Suvla Bay landing grounds. An exhausting day.
