Rythymno old town is very attractively located on the peninsula overlooked by the vast Castle Fortress on a high rock. The walk along the Sea Road below the towering ramparts was delightful with flowers growing up the cliff and views of the waves crashing below.  There are many ruins and buildings in the fortress castle but it was disappointing as the only information was in Greek although the views were good. (Elsewhere in tourist spots there were notices in English)  The streets are narrow with old Venetian mansions, arches; restaurants and tavernas.  As in other places, fresh drinking water is available from springs or fountains like the Rimondi Fountain built in 1626 and at the Lion Fountains in Spili but we enjoyed cold drinks as we sat below a canopy of red bourgainvillea.
