A country lane . . .

. . . that’s usually underwater.

I felt I couldn’t complete my record of the effects of the Cumbrian drought conditions without a trip to Haweswater. We realised that there would be many visitors, so went in the early evening - it’s not far from us, although a tricky drive if you don’t know the roads - we do!

Of course this is a glimpse of the old village of Mardale where people lived . . . until the valley was flooded in the 1920s/30s to create Haweswater Reservoir to provide water for Manchester. In such dry conditions, with the water at the head of the valley gone, lanes, walls, fields, church foundations, can be seen.

It was good to see people wandering down there - quite an eerie experience I would imagine. Quite a learning curve for the children too - something you would remember.

Rain tonight . . . perhaps.
