Pan rydych chi'n ceisio cyfieithu, rydych chi'n ffeindio'n fuan yr ystyron lluosog o'r geiriau yn eich iaith eich hun.

'Reflection', er enghraifft. Mae'n ansawdd o drych (neu arwyneb sgleiniog) neu fel arall ansawdd o eich meddwl (i feddwl am rywbeth). Mae'r ystyron yn wahanol iawn. Yn Gymraeg, un yw 'adlewyrchiad' (ansawdd o drych) yr arall yw 'meddwl' neu 'myfyrdod (ansawdd o eich meddwl).

Mae'n dod yn fwy cymhleth, wrth gwrs, oherwydd bod y geiriau yn Gymraeg yn gallu cael ystyron lluosog yn Saesneg. Er enghraifft 'myfyrdod' (y gair sy'n ystyr 'reflection') yn defnyddio i ystyr 'meditation' hefyd. I fi 'meditation' yn wahanol i feddwl a dylai Cymraeg gair gwahanol hefyd.

When you try to translate, you soon find the multiple meanings of the words in your own language.

'Reflection', for example. It is a quality of a mirror (or shiny surface) or else a quality of your mind (to think about something). The meanings are very different. In Welsh, one is 'adlewyrchiad' (a quality of a mirror) and the other is 'meddwl or 'myfyrdod’ (a quality of your mind).

It becomes more complicated, of course, because the words in Welsh can have multiple meanings in English. For example 'myfyrdod' (the word meaning 'reflection') is also used to mean 'meditation'. For me 'meditation' is different from thinking and Welsh should have a different word too.
