KCNQ2Haiku

Big day

Today has been a significant day in the KCNQ2Haiku world, we were finally able to tell Ben about his residential placement and explain what’s going to happen. He really doesn’t handle uncertainty and waiting, so we had to hold off telling him the plans until they were formally approved, the training had started and some dates for visits were available. It was definitely the right thing to protect him from the planning side, as the process has failed spectacularly, numerous times over the last year or so.. but now we’re all steam ahead, so it was time to bring him into the fold. We know he loves new people and new experiences so we were expecting him to be open to the concept but still it was a very positive reaction. He has been talking about growing up and having his own space lately so he took the idea of moving out of the family home as a real step forward in growing up. Bless him, despite his behaviour and size, he’s so innocent and this is so scary for me.. but we know he needs levels of support that we just can’t provide going forward, so we’re going to be brave and take it one step at a time (and there will be loads of time, there’s lots more training and relationship building to do). To help with us discussing it with Ben, the deputy manager at the home made a welcome video for him to show him around the house virtually and to meet some of the staff he’ll be getting to know, so the photo today (courtesy of Mr KCNQ2Haiku) is of me showing Ben the video and him having his first glimpse of where he’ll be living. We know there will be tears ahead and I’m very worried about literally everything but this was a heart warming first step.
