Telavi

A two and a half hour drive to the border as we continue to Georgia. A further two and a half hours later we make through border control where we were greeted by our guide. After converting some currency we stop at a market stall where we buy Churchkhela, a Georgian candy made with walnuts and grape juice that looks like a candle. It's different!

Our next stop is a family winery for lunch. A great experience with some white wine, lovely red wine and a tiny spot of the local grappa. A feature of Georgia is the abundance of toasts given during the meal. The family were so welcoming and it felt special. A memorable experience. We then head to winery no. 2. Khareba is housed in a tunnel so blankets were borrowed to keep out the cold. We tried a white, red and dessert wines which were all fine although I still preferred the red from the family winery.

Final part of the journey today is to Telavi for a city walking tour and some dinner before booking into the hotel exhausted.
