LEST WE FORGET
It's Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. It's the day we set aside to honor and remember all those who served the country in the military. The actual day is Monday but in Elkhart Lake the ceremony was today. Many people travel over the weekend to visit relatives and attend other memorials so Elkhart Lake chooses to celebrate a couple of days early to accommodate those travelers.

The high school choir performed the National Anthem, the band played patriotic selections, the poem "The Noble and the Brave" by Joanna Fuchs was read by a forensics student and there was a Memorial Address by a member of the military. This year it happened to be a former student of mine now a Major in the Wisconsin Army National Guard who served several deployments in Afghanistan and other Eastern countries. He has a Master's degree as a Physician's Assistant and, in civilian life, serves in that capacity in the Emergency Medicine department at a local hospital.

Extra #1: At the end of the service, the traditional rifle volley followed by the playing of taps was performed by members of a local American Legion Post.

Extra #2: The Elkhart Lake memorial to all those local individuals who served the country in the military.
