Ballast Point Park

A long walk to Balmain and through Birchgrove to Ballast Point, a former Caltex oil depot saved from redevelopment and turned into a park. Traces of the site’s industrial past survive in ruins, sculptures, public art and poetry - Tank 101 as an extra. At harbour level children played in a structure projecting over the water with cutouts in the walls and a grate below. You can go in, I said. Scary.
