Project
Been toying with the idea of another guitar project for a while now. Went to Barrow this morning to drop off my new acoustic at R&T for it to have a couple of tweaks to the set up - mainly switching to lighter strings. Whilst I was there, I asked Vaughan if he had any old Strat type guitars that might need renovating or upgrading. He did, but it had already been cleaned and fitted with new strings so, although it was only £65, I passed.
However, whilst passing CGX a few minutes later I spotted this guitar on offer for a mere £29.99! It seemed pretty straight and the parts that looked a bit rough, I would be replacing anyway. So I took a chance and bought it. When I got it home, a closer examination revealed it was more tired and dirty, rather than anything major. In fact, when I tuned it up and plugged it in, everything worked as it should.
But it can be better. A browse through Northwest Guitars website this afternoon threw up a lot of possibilities, though I’m going to have to watch the budget - no point in spending more than a new Strat might cost.
But I managed that with the bass I built last year, so I’m hopeful. First thing is to strip it all down and clean the parts I’m keeping. And throw away anything I’m going to upgrade.
The less easy decision is going to be what colour I go with. I’m torn between either leaving it as it is and just cleaning it, or going full black. Mind you, I have always wanted to have a go at painting a guitar…
