Look Out

Orchard

To Hay this morning, and it’s another farm visit. The festival organises these visits so that those living in urban areas can get some appreciation of how their food is produced. I enjoy visiting working farms.

Today’s farm grows arable crops and has cattle fattening up (Limousins), but the main focus of the visit is the 92 acres of apple orchards. All the apples go for cider production, the farmer has contracts with both Bulmers and Westons. We had a very informative talk by the beekeepers who keep the hives operational, and then a walk and talk around the apple orchards. I came away with honey (sunshine in a jar), honey cake, and cider. The sun was trying to come out when I took the image - and succeeded (extra).

Back to Hay and then I headed to Brecon to visit the cathedral (a first for me) and have lunch, before taking a circuit through the Brecon Beacons (or Bannau Brycheiniog). The only National Park in GB that I’ve never visited. There are some spectacular landscapes, which are best seen by getting out and walking. That might be for another day.
