Jenners Corner

I was briefly in Edinburgh this afternoon to speak on a panel  at the Scottish Land & Estates Conference.

I walked from Waverley along Princes Street, and back through the gardens.  On the street around Jenners' Corner (as it used to be called) there are hoardings with old pictures of Jenners in its heyday as the most fashionable of Edinburgh Department Stores.   Seen from across the road the  vast amount of work being done on the roof terrace (and the rest of the building)  is currently almost eclipsed by a huge advertisement for the rail route to London.

I remember having  morning coffee with my grandmother in Jenners , a place she frequented regularly .

That must have been in the very early 1960s, which we now can see was at the end of a very different era.  Certainly I remember it - and her - as , even then, being anachronistic .
