The Helensburgh Dragon(s)

We were in Helensburgh for lunch with David Bruce and his wife Barbara.  David was the Director of the old Scottish Film Council and he and I have worked together on a range of things over the years, sharing our interests in Scottish film and photographic history.  His "Scotland in Film" book is still an invaluable source.

Walking to the restaurant he asked if we had ever seen the Helensburgh Dragons - to which the answer was , of course, no.  He then pointed out two such beasts, high on a building opposite the Episcopal Church.  According to his local story (and he has lived in Helensburgh since the late 1960s) they were erected  by an atheistic householder as a counterpoint to the ecclesiastical architecture facing his property which includes gargoyles on the sides of the roof.

I haven't seen anything quite like them since blipping another red dragon in Cardiff a long time ago.   So here is one of them - if you are near Helensburgh the blip map shows their  position.
