Bad timing?

Our first stop this morning is Borjomi Central Park where we were met with construction work in a very run down looking amusement park. Definitely worth a miss, as is the healing, sulphur tasting, natural spring water the place is famous for.

UNESCO site Gelati Monastery is the next stop. This medieval Orthodox monastery was also a centre of science and education and its university was one of the most important centres of culture in ancient Georgia. The main building is currently being restored after previous work failed to stop the water ingress. Inside there are some fabulous frescoes but they are almost impossible to see because of the scaffolding. So much scaffolding!

Later this afternoon we had a walking tour of Kutaisi and although the city has a good feel about it the sights we visited are not exactly memorable. I would have preferred to relax with a coffee and enjoy the atmosphere.

All in all, a disappointing day but that may be down to bad timing as we appear to have seen nothing at it's best.
