Waiting for the Bus to Kirkwall
It was a rash decision to traipse through to the big smoke of Kirkwall this morning without first checking if any cruise ships were visiting, and of course there were two- Mein Schiff 3 disgorging 2,500 passengers and a smaller vessel with 184 passengers. With the narrow streets in the town that accommodate pedestrians, delivery vans and cars, it felt very much like it feels in the centre of Touristy Edinburgh trying to make my way from the wonderful sells everything shop, Shearer’s, to the bus station to come back. All that was missing were gaggles of case pullers or dogs on leads.
The bus home was spot on schedule and there were only 3 of us aboard to start with but I was sole passenger from Finstown to Stromness. It was like having one’s own Uber with a bus pass.
It was a rather nice day, full of sunshine at 5 am with a hiccup of light rain just before I set off to meet the Selkies. The sun appeared again later and this afternoon the wind dropped for an hour and it felt like the Mediterranean as I stravaiged the quiet peaceful lanes above the town. I almost had to take off my jacket, it was that warm. I sat in the garden and contemplated - watching the sea has that effect.
