Peeling Back The Years

The remains of an old elm tree, the top of which collapsed in a storm last year, has been left standing in the prairie for woodpeckers.

Now the bark at its base has sloughed off revealing traces of insect activity under the skin of the tree. But that was not what did for it, although a beetle did carry the disease which led to its demise.
