Marionnettes
A marionnette is a puppet controlled from above using wires or strings. It is not at all the same as hand puppets.
Today, our cultural group outing was to visit a workshop which creates incredibly expressive string puppets. We learnt how they are made, many in wood and others in all kinds of different materials. Too lengthy to write about here.
String Puppet Theatres come to this workshop to ask for
certain characters to be made for their theatre productions. Sketches are made and from those the puppets are created.
After this interesting outing, we all went to have lunch together in a nearby café.
The puppet in the main photo is life sized. I've enclosed a few extras:
- the puppet designer showing us the first sketches
- showing us how the strings are worked to create movement and expression
- an elderly man puppet and various masks made to order
- more expressive creations
- this last one is life-sized
