Should we feed our birds?

How long should one feed birds in summer?
Initially  I thought reducing the food amount would prevent birds from becoming dependent. 

However, after checking the RSPB site, I was alarmed to learn that feeding them at all might spread disease.
 
 Finches, and it mostly finches, are prone to trichomonosis  which affects the throat causing problems with swallowing food and water.
The bad news is that finches are the predominate birds in our garden.

The RSPB has stopped selling bird tables and recommends washing and disinfecting bird feeders every few weeks, ideally once a week.
