Royalty and Romans
This morning we ventured into Hexham again chiefly to visit the old jail. Before that we visited the Abbey gardens. The area was strangely quiet, a feeling I often have experienced when something was about to happen. We then saw barricades had been erected around the front of the Abbey and Union flags were being draped between lampposts. I asked a council worker what was happening and he said the Queen was visiting. It took me a moment to remember we had a new one!
So my main Blip is of the expectant crowd waiting for her arrival three and a half hours early. We didn’t wait.
My extra complements yesterday’s Blip. We went onto visit Corbridge Roman Town. Cesters Fort was the most northerly gateway into the Roman Empire and Corbridge was the furthest northern Roman civilian town in the Empire.
Anything further north were just fort support communities and not a fully functioning town. What is on show is just a small part of what was built. I’ve opted to show the officers area. Both military and civilian communities make up what has been rediscovered during the 20th century.
