Happy Moments

Upleatham

The small village of Upleatham is about 10 minutes from us. I first blipped St Andrew Old Church a year ago and looking back I can see I chose the view which includes today’s blip which is (most probably) the remains of the Lowther family vault.

It’s got quite a fascinating history, a lot of which I’ve gleaned from Teeside Archives part of Middlesbrough Council.

One little nugget I’m including is that a lot of the village, some 70% was lost through subsidence issues caused by the workings of the nearby Upleatham Ironstone Mine. We are talking a long time ago mind you 1851 onwards, even so, obviously what’s left is just a fraction of the original village.

We just went out for a short drive today for some supermarket essentials really, but went a long way round so I could get my blip. I also took quite a few pictures that might be used for camera club summer challenge.

Looking through them, I decided this is good for Derelict Sunday, so thank you Marlieske for hosting.
