a lifetime burning

Take 2

The new macro flash diffuser has arrived and I thought it would be interesting to compare yesterday's shot of a hoverfly (taken without flash) with today's shot, which was taken with flash using the new diffuser.

They are two different species of hoverfly - today's is slightly smaller than yesterday's marmalade fly.  In today's shot, if you go large, you can just see a tiny baby spider by the fly's back foot.

I'm rather pleased with the results of the new diffuser on this first attempt, as it has largely avoided specular highlights, and provided a pleasantly soft even light.

It's not going to help with moving subjects, but for still insects I will definitely be using it more.  (Many thanks to Draco who originally pointed me at the Cygnustech diffuser system).
