1900's general store, Gaspé
we learnt a bit about the history of Canada today., first at Fort Peninsula where we looked around a restored on shore battery used to defend against the Germans in the 2nd world war. I hadn't realised that they'd reached that far. Later on we stopped at Gaspé to look around the 'Birthplace of Canada site'. It was near here that Jaques Cartier landed in 1534 and erected a cross to claim the land for France. I'm sure though the locals at that time would say that Canada already existed, albeit under a different name. Apparently the local name 'kanata' meaning village was misunderstood so the place was named 'canada'.
There are some buildings reconstructed to show the village as it was in the 1900s including this general store.
