Elephant Hawk Moth

A moth, owl and bat evening at WWT Martin Mere.

The moth trap had caught some excellent moths. The elephant hawk moths were my favourite. In extras, poplar hawk moth and peppered moth.

There are two pairs of barn owl at the reserve this year (last year there were five pairs). A no show this evening, but we got to parts of the reserve normally out of bounds to the public which was interesting.

There are seven species of bat on the reserve. We ticked off common and soprano pipistrelle, noctule and daubentons. We also found the torn off wings of yellow underwing moths under the “plucking post” used by a brown long eared bat.

Back home before midnight. Just. I’ll treat myself to a lie in tomorrow.
