Purple Thing

Not entirely sure what this plant is.  It re-appears every year and produces this lovely purple leaf/flower before dying off completely. We inherited it when we moved in 11 years ago and despite neglect and being choked by surrounding yellow Alstrumera it keeps coming back. It is lovely, in an ugly sort of way.
