Sea birds galore
We’ve had a great day and are thoroughly exhausted. We left our hotel in Thurso and headed to Dunnet Beach for a breezy walk and then to Dunnet Head to look for seabirds. It was very busy, there are lots of motor homes in Caithness at the moment and I’m sure there will be for the rest of the summer. It’s such a popular destination these days since the North Coast 500 was ‘invented’. Many of the visitors are from overseas.
My main shot is of a pair of razorbills at Dunnet Head, they are possibly my favourite seabird, with the exception of gannets (none around here today).
Next we drove to Duncansby Head and spent several hours walking and watching the thousands of birds nesting on the cliffs. Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Shags and the amazing city of Guillemots shown in my first extra. There were a few Puffins as well on top of the stacks, second extra.
We are staying in a guest house in Tain tonight which is lovely but the dining options are not great. We ended up in a pub around 7 miles away which we have been to once before many years ago. It is packed out and we were really lucky to get a table, I didn’t realise Father’s Day was such a big thing these days.
