A distant view of the Scafells
On Deb's and my Bucket list for a while was to walk up Black Combe, one of Wainwright's "outlying fells. " Whether we'll do many of the other outlying fells is likely, but we certainly won't do them all.
The walk up was a steady climb, not particularly steep, but fairly constant. the route we chose for the descent went north west of the summit and returned near the coast. Overgrown in places, almost fighting through bracken, and sudden areas of very boggy ground. The last mile was on the verge of the A595, so pretty unpleasant - if we did it again, we'd either come down the way we went up, or choose a different route.
Reaching the summit, we were in dense cloud with zero visibility - a shame, as the views of the Lake District and the Isle of Man are meant to be superb. Add to that the largest summit shelter I've ever seen - with the trig point inside it, and it could be quite photogenic, but not today!
Were treated in the evening by a visit from Mike (my son) who has just finished the first year of his interior design degree, so far only his design project has been marked, for which he received a 1st class.
