The Other Side
Yesterday, just after 8pm I thought I was going to be waiting another week but ten minutes later I got THE CALL and I was booked in for my shoulder surgery today. L and I were at the RIE for 7:30am and after a while it looked like I was going to be third op of the day and therefore ‘possible’ I could get out this evening. Gown on a bit after 11am I was expecting at least a couple of hours wait but it was more like one and a bit as the practise of getting everyone there and ready proved its worth. I was moved up to second and was rapidly in the operating theatre ante room, talking with the op team members about becoming a photographer. One of them had been doing costume design at QMU, just like the students who became friends when I had such fun photographing them for my creative collaboration on my college course, before she switched to nursing. I was given some pre-anaesthetic that they said would make me feel a little drunk, I remember them saying I could see the sonar scan of my shoulder so they knew exactly where to inject the nerve blocker and next thing I was coming to, post-op. L was told and came through from the waiting room to sit with me as I had something to eat and drink, passed the required weight of pee, got out of bed and walked to the toilet and thereby ticked all the necessary boxes to get discharged. Blipped my bed as we left. Back home for tea in front of the telly!
