Part of a Roman altarpiece, recording a dedication by a soldier (originally from the Danube frontier) to the gods, and which had been reused as a lintel to a medieval doorway in the outer gatehouse of Carlisle castle (the castle, 900 plus years old, is partly built on the remains of a Roman fort). Only rediscovered in 1987.
My half-way stop today as I travel up to H and I’s in the Lothians.
