Bayeux War cemetery

This morning we walked into Bayeux for a look around. It is such a beautiful town and the cathedral I think is the most beautiful I’ve ever been in.

After lunch we went to the Bayeux War Cemetery which is the biggest British War cemetery anywhere. There are various nationalities there including Germans. It shows the futility of war. So beautifully kept and I found a Thornton (my maiden name) , a Greenwood (mum’s maiden name) and a Parkin (her mum’s maiden name). However the ‘special’ one for me was Gerald Benson Faller, Coldstream Guards, aged 20 , died 19 years to the day before Mr H was born who also served with the Coldstream Guards.

Later we revisited Arramanche, and then went on to Juno beach where de Gaulle and King George VI landed after D day.

The extras are 4 Coldstreamer’s and a single grave for 3 soldiers - presumably killed together and unable to identify what belonged to who.

Will we ever learn?
