IT'S THURSDAY - so it must be...
...Community Fridge day!
As we left home this morning, it was drizzling, but it soon became quite a downpour - I wasn’t that bothered for myself but I was thinking of our Community Fridge customers as I knew many would be queuing in the rain. However, after about 45 minutes the rain stopped and the sun came out, which was much better!
We had lots of lovely goodies at the Community Fridge Today - and we are so grateful to the various supermarkets who give us their waste. Sometimes the fruit and veg can go straight out but this morning I had several water melons and Honeydew melons to cut up and lots of oranges and satsumas to sort out whilst someone else was making the leeks look better by “topping snd tailing” them and yet another volunteer was bagging up the KFC frozen chicken.
We had lots of "free" food today, which means that our customers can take as much as they want and it doesn't count as one of their five items. We were pleased to see that the table containing the free food was virtually empty by the time we closed today.
After that I spent sometime on the desk where the produce is weighed - which meant I could sit down. We have to note down which area of the town the customer is from and also their ethnicity and this is the time we can chat with our customers and get to know them a little better. This information is needed by those who give us various grants - and I’m getting better at remembering without having to ask every time!
Most of us took a turn in the café chatting to various customers, which is always a pleasure and then, before we knew it, the clock showed it was 2 o’clock so it was time to close.
We then have to clear the kitchen, clean the tables ready for them to be put away and the chairs have to be stacked - but fortunately some of the men who come into the Community Fridge are happy to help us, which is great because we all know that “many hands make light work”! Meg does sterling work each week sweeping the floor - and I love it, because any mess on the tables, I can just throw onto the floor and she is happy to sweep it up.
I’m very grateful that we don’t have to go out this evening so I can read some more of my library book - after I’ve cooked our evening meal, that is!
Although it’s sunny, the wind is still very strong and has obviously dispersed the rain clouds - but our garden really could do with a prolonged downpour. Mr HCB tells me it is due to get warmer by the weekend, so we may need that sun cream for our Church Picnic after the service on Sunday! M xx
