Milestone
This was forecast to be the hottest, sunniest day so far but mad dogs and Englishmen....(we're both English) did indeed go out in the midday sun. In Stamford, expecting the hordes of yesterday to be back at work.
Suitably behatted and the usual sun protection in place we wandered round looking for nothing in particular. We discovered Browne's Hospital by chance, admiring the clock tower and were invited to go through the door to see the garden. This approach was similar to a cloister. The Hospital was founded in 1475 by William Browne a rich wool merchant, providing almshouses for 10 men and 2 women. In 1485 King Richard III granted William Browne the first licence to convert the Hospital into a perpetual corporation which survives to this day. As it is open to visitors only at weekends, we continued our perambulations.
The Browne family and Hospital had close associations with All Saints Church, the parents of William and John have C15 brasses, the font is C15, but the columns date from 1225 ('shafted piers' on the south side, those of the north aisle remodeled in a plain style).
Heading across Red Lion Square I noticed this milestone, which seemed to be out of place given the traffic. More strangely a litter bin has been placed so close that one side is nigh on impossible to read by anyone, let alone a traveler seeking a distance marker. I felt that it deserved recognition on the pages of Blipfoto.
As we drove away the car registered 33°C, it is now nearly 10pm and we have turned on the fan in the house... .
