Turn of the century
It was another day in the office in town today so by rights I should have blipped another in the ridiculous and amazing series of KeepCup-themed photographs. I did take one, though, just in case nothing else came to mind.
What came to mind was much later on when I was looking down to Waverley station and I saw another of the named LNER Azuma trains, fresh from an heroic trip up the railway from That London. This one is called Century, and was unveiled in 2023 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the LNER. It was also the first of the Azuma fleet to receive special branding. Behind the letters are images of iconic locomotives and people, namely Flying Scotsman; no. 10000 which was Gresley's experimental high pressure locomotive; Sir Nigel Gresley himself; DP1, the prototype class 55 Deltic; the class 43 HST; the class 91 electrics that I will forever think of as Electra; and the class 800-series Azuma. If you're wondering why, then, the BR-developed class 370 APT doesn't feature, given that the class 91 was to a large extent the productionised APT with the complicated bits removed and better power cars, it's simply that the APT was designed predominantly for the West Coast Main Line, and LNER (and GNER, NEEC and VTEC before) didn't have anything to do with it. I think it's still a bit naughty of LNER then to claim that anything from the BR era like the HSTs is worthy of inclusion!
