a lifetime burning

Pre-flight checks

The pond has been pushing out Common Darters for the last week or so, but I've been otherwise engaged.  This morning I checked to see if there was anyone new at around 6am but completely failed to spot this one until much later - by which time all the excitement of the emergence was over.  It is still drying off its wings and charging its batteries but it is ready to fly now.  As a result, it was quite tricky to get a shot of it, without spooking it - as it was nestled in the midst of the Iris leaves.  I've ended up with this "through the keyhole shot" which is a good record of the insect but not the tidiest of images.
