V&A
This morning I visited the World Press Photography Awards on show at a gallery at the Olympic Park. An impressive display of great photoraphs, but not exactly uplifting. Pictures of war, starvation, climate change and disasters generally. However, it did display the importance of journalism generally and photojournalism in particular and the value of a free press. So many of the world's events are not recorded or published because of constraints on reporters and photographers.
Before leaving the area I popped into the V&A East Storehouse, just around the corner from the gallery. This opened earlier this year. It is basically a modern warehouse for storing some of the thousands of items held by the V&A but for which there is not enough space to display at the South Kensington museum. The storehouse is laid out so that visitors can see many of the items but, apart from some general information about types and classes of items stored, there is little detail about the items. It makes for a fascinating insight to the range of treasures collected by the V&A.
